When you want to indicate that some verb or action is in process, either past or present, we call it "Presente/Past Progressive". In this tense, every verb will end in "ING" like:

PAST PROGRESSIVE

-Action in progress at a stated time in the past.
He WAS DRIVING to work at 9 o'clock yesterday.

-Actions that were happening simultaneously in the past.
